Hammamet (plural of Hammam orbaths) is a big Mediterranean seaside resort, situated on the South-East Coast of the Cap Bon Tunisia, along a wonderful gulf to which it gives the name. It is situated about half way between Tunis, the capital

city(64 Km) and Sousse, the  pearl of the Sahel (84 Km). Thanks to the different composition of the soil, it offers a great variety of landscapes.

It has got a Mediterranean climate, mild and sunny. It is mitigated by the sea and this brings to a light difference in temperature during the year.

It has different types of trees but the dominant species are the “THUYAS DE BARBERIE”, the lemon trees, the orange trees, the olive trees, the fig trees, the tangerines, the mulberry trees, the bitter orange trees, etc.

Thanks to its strategic position in the center of the Mediterranean, to its mild climate and to its fertile soil, the region of Hammamet always attracted so many people and was invaded by the Tyrant of Syracuse Agathocles, in 256 B.C. by the Consul of Rome Regolo, in 1602 by the Knights of Malta, etc. During the Punic Age, Hammamet became one of the most fertile areas of the region.

The Arabs preferred the site of the present Medina which is situated on a small cape to the North of Pupput. In 1881, a new era began for Hammamet: the French colonization. The town was conquered by the French company of Tunis under the command of Désiré Bordier.

The Media lost its importance as a central point of trade and life and it was replaced by a new urban center outside the walls. Hammamet modernized without losing its identity and its original fascination.

Nowadays, Hammamet has become a well-known holiday resort and many celebrities have decided to live there, struck by the calmness and beauty of the place: Winston Churchill, Marshal Rommel, George Bernanos, François chatelet, Christian Berond, Serge Lifar, Ernesto Azzalin, Jean Claude Pascal, Bettino Craxi, etc.

Hammamet is also a cultural town. In 1962 the international Cultural Centre was created in the property of George S2bastian and bought by the Government in 1962. Each year, in this theatre the international festival of Hammamet takes place in July and August and gathers famous artists from all over the world.

Regarding he old Media of Hammamet, it is a place you need to see, a piece of history which can enchant still today. When you look at the old fortress from the sea, you think of the hopes, the thoughts of the ancient sailors approaching it, fishermen who came back to their families, tradesmen longing for selling their goods, pirates coming back to their shelter and conquerors in search of a new conquest.

In the last ten years, as a consequence of a growing social and tourist expansion, the town of Hammamet has divided into two parts. In the south area, there are hundreds of new hotels, now residential areas, a famous marina, a new medina and many other commercial and tourist structures.

The pictures cannot describe completely the beauty of the meanings of this place; you need to live there from dawn to sunset.

At dawn (in the first light of day), the horizon appears magically, the palms and the gardens along the coastline reveal themselves, the sea and the sandy beaches fade during the day, which in its last part, gives the excitement of a light turning to shade.

The sea, spectacular, indescribable in its color and nature, sometimes blue, sometimes emerald-green, some days calm and clear, some days dark and tumultuous.
